About Neal A. Sher:
"I have been practicing ophthalmology for almost thirty years and still find the field dynamic, exciting and rewarding. I enjoy working with many wonderful patients over a number of years and getting to know them and their families. With refractive surgery patients, I have particularly enjoyed the very gratifying results of removing a visual handicap and literally changing the lives of thousands of patients. For some, it has opened up new career opportunities such as qualifying for police, fire, military or other fields which have vision requirements. For the members of the armed forces, it has meant one less worry on the battlefield and added safety. For others, it has enabled them to enjoy sports and leisure activities. I continue to believe that it is of utmost importance that I personally take care of all my patients, before, during, and after any type of eye surgery. With rare exceptions for patients who live out of the area, I do not delegate this care to other healthcare providers outside my office. I feel only the surgeon who performs the surgery is best qualified to take care of the patient in the postoperative period."
It has been very exciting to see the refractive surgery field grow rapidly and these procedures become one of the most common and successful surgical procedures performed each year in the United States and around the world.
A native of New York, Dr. Sher received his MD degree with honors from Boston University. He then moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to train in Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. After his internship, he entered the U.S. Public Health Service in 1972 and became a Staff Associate at the National Institutes of Health (NIH); he spent the next three years in Bethesda, Maryland, performing tumor immunology research. At that time he became interested in ocular immunology and in 1975 entered an ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota. This was followed by corneal and external disease fellowship training at Moorfield's Eye Hospital in London, England. Returning to Minneapolis, he went into private practice and in 1984 was a founding member of the Phillips Eye Institute, a prestigious specialty eye hospital for which he has served as Chief of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Sher is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. He is in private practice in Minneapolis at Eye Care Associates and is an attending surgeon at the Phillips Eye Institute. He maintains an active refractive surgery practice as well as teaching and lecturing worldwide. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 scientific papers, book chapters or monographs.
In 1994, Dr. Sher was awarded the Troutman Medal by the International Society for Refractive Surgery (ISRS). The award was for his paper on pain control in corneal laser surgery. In 1997, he was elected to the Board of Directors for the ISRS.
A consultant for number of companies involved in the care and treatment of ophthalmic problems, he has participated in research on corneal laser surgery, including LASIK and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), PTK (phototherapeutic keratotomy), wound healing and pain control. Dr. Sher holds four patents on ophthalmic medical devices and processes.
Dr. Sher is the editor of two textbooks, Surgery for Hyperopia and Presbyopia published in 1997 and Surgery for Hyperopia published in October 2003. He authored a monograph (December 1998) on excimer laser surgery and postoperative care for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has served as a member of the Preferred Practice Patterns Panel of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for Refractive Errors and Refractive Surgery and is a reviewer for a number of ophthalmic publications.
Dr. Sher makes his home in Minneapolis with his wife and has two adult daughters. He is an avid movie fan and enjoys travel, photography and gardening.
